The Supplication and Intercession as a Candle Ritual

We are allowed to entrust our needs to God and his saints in prayer and to express requests, be it for ourselves as supplication or for others as intercession. The Mother of God Mary is traditionally called for help and intercession, in the Celtic area also Saint Brigid. This can be done in a spontaneous way or in a ritual form for big matters of the heart, for example by lighting a candle in front of a cross or figure of a saint. The colours of the candles can vary according to Christian colour lore.

What do I need for the candle ritual?

  • An image or figure of Saint Mary or a Celtic cross or the figure of another saint. This helps to draw attention to the presence of God or the saints.
  • Frankincense and myrrh and a censer
  • A lady candle or Easter candle
  • Beeswax candles in different colours according to the request made. We recommend beeswax candles because they do not produce soot and have a pleasant scent.
  • Candlesticks or a bowl of sand for thin beeswax ritual candles

Candles and censer should never be left burning unattended.

Arrangement of the ritual site

Dedicate a place in your home for this ritual. An altar for this is ideal, but you can also do without it. The altar is arranged as follows:

  • The figure of Mary or the cross is in the centre.
  • On the left is the sacrificial candle in the appropriate color for the occasion, a new one for every occasion.
  • On the right side is the Mary or Easter candle. It can be used for multiple occasions.
  • The censer stands behind the statue of Mary.

Course of supplication as a candle ritual

  1. Light the left candle, then the right candle, and then the censer.
  2. Sit in silence for a while and reflect on your request for yourself or someone else.
  3. Say a supplication to Mary, Jesus, God, or a request for intercession to a saint. Mother Mary can be invoked with the Salve Regina or freely formulated.
  4. Direct your gaze to the statue and feel its presence resonate within you. Sit as long as you want to do this.
  5. If you feel like it, stop the ritual. The sacrificial candle can burn to the end, but better not without supervision. You can also blow out the candle and let it finish burning on another occasion. You can delete the lady candle or Easter candle when the ritual is over.

Salve Regina

O, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy,

Hail our life, our sweetness and our hope.

To thee do we cry,

Poor banished children of Eve;

To thee do we send up our sighs,

Mourning and weeping in this vale of tears.

Turn then, most gracious advocate,

Thine eyes of mercy toward us;

And after this our exile,

Show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

O clement, O loving,

O sweet Virgin Mary.
